Depoe Bay is located only seven
miles south of Lincoln city and is known as the "Whale Watching
Capital of the Oregon Coast". There is a resident pod of
gray whales which make their home off Depoe Bay 10 months of the
year. Visitors from all over the world come to whale watch from
the shore or by taking local boat tours.
Depoe Bay has the smallest
natural navigable harbor in the world consisting of only six
square acres. A huge sea wall runs the entire length of the downtown area
which enables visitors to shop or dine always within view of the
ocean. This is the only town on the entire coast with this
feature.
Ocean waves run beneath lava beds and build pressure to
spout water as high as 60 feet into the air. These are known as
spouting horns and can be seen during turbulent seas and stormy
weather.
